What actually happens to the body during a massage
It is not just pleasant. There are measurable effects on the nervous system, and some limits worth knowing.
Massage works on two levels: the mechanical one, on tissue, and the nervous one, on the autonomic system. The second gets talked about less and is often the more interesting.
Mechanically
Pressure on tissue increases local flow and helps release adhesions between fascial planes. On a posture-driven neck contracture, that is why the neck moves better on the way out.
Neurologically
Slow, rhythmic contact shifts the balance towards the parasympathetic system: heart rate down, breathing lengthening. It is the same reason many people fall asleep on the table, and it is not bad manners.
The limits
A massage does not resolve a postural cause or chronic stress: it relieves the symptom. If the contracture comes back reliably after five days, the problem is the desk or the load, not the number of sessions.
When to avoid it
Fever, acute inflammation, known thrombosis, certain stages of pregnancy. If in doubt, ask your doctor: we would rather postpone an appointment than do harm.
