Sunscreen: the five questions we always get

SPF 30 or 50, how much to apply, whether you need it in the city, whether foundation is enough. Short answers, no hedging.

SPF 30 or 50?

Fifty, if you apply it once in the morning. The theoretical gap between 30 and 50 is small, but nobody applies the laboratory amount: starting at 50 leaves you some margin.

How much should I use?

Two fingers of product laid along the index and middle finger, for face and neck. That is far more than most people use.

Do I need it in the city, in winter?

Yes, for UVA, which passes through cloud and glass and is the main driver of ageing and pigmentation.

Is foundation with SPF enough?

No. Reaching the stated protection would take an amount of foundation nobody applies. Use it as a supplement, not a substitute.

Should I reapply?

Every two hours outdoors, after swimming and after sweating. On an office day, a single morning application is reasonable.
